Is Sandustry Similar to Factorio? (vs Mindustry)

Sandustry vs Factorio vs Mindustry: how the automation games compare on destructible worlds, sand physics, tower defense and multiplayer.

Is Sandustry Like Factorio? Yes, With a Twist

Is Sandustry similar to Factorio? In intent, yes: both games are about building automated production that grows beyond what you could manage by hand. The twist is what the world is made of. In Factorio you place machines on a fixed tile grid and items move as discrete units on belts. In Sandustry the world itself is the material - a falling-sand simulation where every pixel can be mined, mixed, flooded, frozen or burned. Sand piles up, water flows downhill, lava melts through your floor, and steam rises back into rain. Your factory doesn't sit on the world; it is carved out of it.

That single difference ripples through everything: how you transport goods, how you deal with byproducts, why your factory floods, and what "defense" even means. The overlap is real - players of one will recognize the loop of the other within minutes - but the texture of play is distinct.

Sandustry vs Factorio

  • World - Sandustry: a destructible pixel world where terrain, water and lava are simulated participants. Factorio: an effectively infinite tile grid built for clean factory layout.
  • Transport - Sandustry: conveyors, vertical launchers, pipes, and gravity itself - you can route materials by digging a channel and letting density sort them. Factorio: belts, trains, bots; precise, predictable, tileable.
  • Byproducts & failure - Sandustry: slag accumulates, mixed piles need filtering, a botched pipe floods the line; failure is physical. Factorio: bottlenecks are logical - throughput math, not spilled lava.
  • Exploration - Sandustry: dig downward into caves, lava chambers, ancient ruins and artifact puzzles. Factorio: expand outward across the surface, clearing biter nests for resource patches.
  • Maturity & scale - Factorio has a decade of polish, a famous modding ecosystem, and effectively no bugs. Sandustry is a week into Early Access - already polished enough for 97% positive reviews across roughly 1,500 Steam reviews, but smaller and still growing.
  • Price - Factorio lists at $35.00 and almost never discounts; Sandustry lists at $14.99 and launched with a 35% discount (about $9.75) through late August 2026. Snapshots as of August 17, 2026 - check current prices before buying.

Who it suits: if you love Factorio's automation but keep wishing the world itself were more alive - wanting Noita-style material physics where sand, water and lava genuinely interact - Sandustry is aimed at you. If you want the deepest, most mature factory game ever made and care about blueprint-perfect megabases, Factorio remains the standard.

Sandustry vs Mindustry

Mindustry sits in a different corner of the triangle: factory building plus tower defense plus RTS. Its production chains exist to feed turrets and manufacture combat units; you defend your core against waves and can play the whole thing as online PvP or co-op, cross-platform, including on mobile. Sandustry has no defense layer and no multiplayer - it is a single-player automation sandbox through and through. Where Mindustry's question is "can your factory survive the wave," Sandustry's is "can your factory survive physics."

Price-wise, Mindustry is the cheapest of the three on Steam ($9.99 as of August 2026, with frequent deep sales) and free elsewhere in open-source form; it's also the only one of the three with a real mobile version - Sandustry has no mobile build (see the platform guide).

Sandustry vs Factorio Platform Comparison

  • Sandustry - Steam, GOG, Microsoft Store, PC Game Pass (day one); Windows/macOS/Linux; single-player only; 23 interface languages; free browser demo on itch.io.
  • Factorio - Steam and its own site; Windows/macOS/Linux; single-player plus co-op multiplayer; a huge mod portal.
  • Mindustry - Steam, itch.io and mobile (Android/iOS); online PvP and co-op, cross-platform multiplayer.

The short version: all three run on the desktop platforms that matter. Multiplayer is the dividing line - Factorio offers co-op, Mindustry is built around competitive and co-op play, and Sandustry is deliberately single-player (a community multiplayer mod exists but is unofficial; the multiplayer guide has details).

Sandustry or Factorio: Which Should You Play?

  • Automation plus destructible sand physics plus underground exploration -> Sandustry.
  • Mature, deep, traditional factory design with co-op and a decade of mods -> Factorio.
  • Automation plus tower defense plus RTS plus multiplayer -> Mindustry.

They're not mutually exclusive, and honestly the cheapest way to decide is Sandustry's free browser demo - twenty minutes of digging sand and piping water tells you more than any comparison table. If you already own Factorio and want something adjacent rather than identical, Sandustry's physics-first take on the same instincts is exactly the gap it fills.
