Sandustry Tips & Tricks: What to Know Before You Play

Sandustry tips and tricks: hotkeys, currency priorities, material density, fast gold production, water management and scouting advice for new players.

Sandustry gameplay: a sand factory with conveyors

The Sandustry tips below are the ones that change your first week: hotkeys that save an hour, the currency mistake almost everyone makes, and the production trick that turns slag into gold. Nothing here requires late-game tech - it's all usable from your first map.

Sandustry Tips: Hotkeys That Make Life Easier

A few bindings save a huge amount of time once you know them. Learn these first - most of them you'll use every single session:

  • V - toggle the tile grid so you can see a building's footprint before placing it.
  • W + Space - hover mode with no collision, letting you walk through your own factory instead of around it.
  • Shift+C / Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V - copy and paste structures to build repeats fast. The single biggest time-saver once your factory grows.
  • X - delete while dragging (note: material inside gets dropped, not destroyed).
  • Ctrl + drag - overwrite existing structures instead of being blocked by them.
  • Alt + number / Alt + scroll - switch between your ten hotbars.
  • Q - open the build menu; drag items onto your hotbar to keep them one click away.
  • E - open your toolbox for quick item access.
  • Shift+click - mark targets for your drones and weapons.

If you only memorize three: V before you build, Shift+C before you build anything twice, and W+Space when you're stuck inside your own conveyor maze.

Sandustry Tips for the Three Currencies

Sandustry has three currencies, and knowing which one you're earning at any moment prevents the most common early stall:

  • Gold - spent on Research to unlock structures, weapons and automation. The early game's whole goal is making this flow.
  • Fluxite (purple) - spent on Upgrades for tools, weapons and drones. Usually becomes the bottleneck right when you feel comfortable.
  • Energy - powers late-game structures like the synthesizer. Doesn't matter for hours, then suddenly is all that matters.

The tip that pays for itself: don't sit on gold. Spending it early on infrastructure snowballs - a press bought now funds the next two researches, while a gold pile buys nothing. The one exception worth planning for is saving toward a specific high-tier research unlock you know is coming at your next Factory Level.

Sandustry Material Density & Filtering Tips

Every material has a density. The lightest stay on top and gold is the heaviest, so it sinks to the bottom of any pile. This isn't trivia - it's a free sorting mechanism:

  • When you have a mixed pile, filter the densest material first and work upward. A Filter set to Allow or Block a single material does the job.
  • Filters only move at regular belt speed. Upgrading belts won't fix a line bottlenecked at a filter - redesign the line instead.
  • Lava sits between red sand and gold in the density order - useful for stripping it out of a mixed pile before it reaches something flammable.
  • Grabbers carry one material at a time early on. Annoying at first, but it means a grabber line is also a crude sorter if you exploit it deliberately.

Sandustry Launchers Beat Belts for Speed

Conveyors move solids horizontally; launchers throw them vertically or diagonally, and the map has far more vertical than horizontal room. Launchers are your best early transport tool and worth building in stacks - a chain of them forms a lift that moves material up through your factory's floors.

One caution from players who learned it the messy way: Mark 2 launchers are fast enough to overshoot your factory and throw material somewhere you didn't intend. The standard launchers are usually plenty until you've measured where things actually land.

Sandustry Tips to Make Gold Fast

Three structures refine into gold: the Shaker, the Kinetic Slag Press and the Planter Box. The early-game ranking is not close - the Kinetic Slag Press gives by far the most gold, so unlocking it early is the single highest-value research move in your first session. The Shaker's yield is probabilistic; the press's is deterministic, and it feeds on the slag your shaker line was producing anyway.

Two multipliers stack on top of the press: burn your slag before pressing (burnt slag is the actual input), and copy-paste (Shift+C) your first working press setup into a second one the moment gold allows. The Kinetic Press guide has the full build.

Sandustry Water Tips: A Core Resource

You'll need water constantly - sand plus water makes wet sand, and wet sand is where gold begins. The tips that matter:

  • Pick your base spot near a real water source. A big lake, not a puddle - moving water later is harder than moving anything else.
  • Groundwater, melting ice and rain are all real sources. Before pipes unlock, you can even move water as steam and let it condense where you need it.
  • Infinite water is buildable. The cryoblaster-snow-steam-rain loop is documented on the official wiki - the lava & water guide walks through it.

Sandustry Scout Before You Build

Before committing to a base location, scout the full map. What you're looking for: a large water body, a sand field big enough to feed shakers for hours, open space to grow into, and solid rock walls you can crack open later with rockets - high-value material often sits behind them. The map rewards a five-minute walk before a five-hour build.

While exploring, keep an eye out for artifacts and augments scattered across the map - they speed up progression meaningfully, and augments enhance your gun, rocket, shovel and movement. Digging down reveals caves, lava chambers and ancient ruins; the deeper systems are covered in core mechanics.

Sandustry Tips: Match Your Tool to the Job

Weapons are tools with a resource cost, and the match-ups matter:

  • Gun - farming sand and loose material. The workhorse.
  • Rocket launcher - solid red sand and fluxite deposits, plus cracking open sealed rock.
  • Flamethrower - ice and anything that needs sustained heat. Also how you relight cinder into lava.
  • Laser - punches through most surface-layer obstacles, but eats energy. Save it for ore walls the other tools can't touch.

Upgrade strategy: max one weapon line before splitting. Stacked upgrades on one tool beat scattered upgrades across three.

Sandustry Tips: The Fixes People Miss

  • Trapped in terrain or a portal gap? The pause menu has an unstuck command - no need to reload your save.
  • Line backed up? Check for a filter bottleneck or a mixed pile before adding more belts.
  • Don't know what a material does? The Material Scanner upgrade for your grabber tells you on hover - among the best early Fluxite spends in the game.
