What Does the Sandustry Kinetic Press Do?
The Kinetic Slag Press processes burnt slag into gold and spores. It is one of the three core gold-producing structures - alongside the Shaker and the Planter Box - and in the early game it gives the most gold per unit of effort. If you're coming from the beginner guide wondering which machine to save up for first, this is usually the answer.
Why it earns that spot: the Shaker's gold yield is probabilistic (you're panning, essentially), but the press is deterministic - burnt slag in, gold and spores out, every time. Once your shaker line produces a steady stream of slag byproduct, the press converts a "waste problem" into your primary income.
How to Feed the Sandustry Kinetic Press
The press is not a belt-in, belt-out machine, and that trips up new players. It works by impact: material has to fall onto it from a decent height. That shapes the whole design of a press setup:
- Build vertical. Raise your burnt slag supply - a launcher tower or an elevated platform - so slag drops onto the press from above.
- Separate the outputs. Gold and spores leave the press together; route them onto different lines (more on that under output).
- Keep the burn upstream. Slag becomes burnt slag by burning - a controlled burn step before the drop turns raw shaker output into press fuel.
The feeding rule of thumb: if the press isn't producing, look up. Nine times out of ten the drop height collapsed or the feed line above backed up.
Dealing With Sandustry Kinetic Press Jams
The official wiki documents the press's jamming behavior directly: when too much material backs up around it, the press stops working cleanly. The fix that's also on the wiki: angled launchers that pull material away from the press and keep the feed zone clear. Set a launcher at an angle below the output side and it flings excess clear of the machine automatically.
Jams have a second, sneakier cause: mixed input. If unburnt slag or stray materials ride the line into the press area, they pile where burnt slag should be falling. A filter set to allow only burnt slag (see filters) before the drop point prevents most of these before they start.
What Happens to the Sandustry Kinetic Press Output
Two products come out, and each has its own destination:
- Gold goes to your collector and becomes research points - the loop that funds everything else. See core mechanics for how gold drives the research tree.
- Spores open the plant chain: spores plus water become wet spores, wet spores become seeds in a Planter Box, and seeds grow into flowers. One press, fed right, supplies both an economy and a farm.
The press therefore sits at the center of a surprisingly complete production tree: sand in at one end, gold research and flower farming at the other, with the copper and materials chains waiting further down the tech tree.
How to Unlock the Sandustry Kinetic Press
The Kinetic Slag Press is unlocked through research, on the refining path of the tree - the same branch that matters for the Shaker, with the Planter Box and Filters nearby at different stages. The practical unlock order most runs follow: Shaker first (gold must exist before anything else), Logistics second (belts and launchers to move it), then the press research the moment your slag pile starts looking like a problem. From first gold to first press is usually a single session.
Sandustry Kinetic Press, Planter Box & Filter: The Working Trio
Three structures operate as a unit in a mature setup:
- Kinetic Slag Press - converts burnt slag to gold and spores; the engine.
- Planter Box - takes wet spores to seeds and grows flowers; turns the press's byproduct into a second resource line.
- Filter - configurable to allow or block a single material; sorts the mixed output stream and guards the input line.
One filter behavior worth knowing before you automate around it: filters move material at regular belt speed no matter what feeds them, and materials can react inside a filter if two reactive materials meet there - the wiki flags this exact failure mode. Don't route anything hot, wet or flammable through a shared filter with your gold line.
